Heat & Trail Blazers Claim First Wins After Player Arrests
The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat earned a decisive 146-114 win against the Grizzlies in their initial basketball match since guard Terry Rozier was detained over suspected illegal sports betting.
Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping FBI investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals contest the claims.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and later stated Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Complete backing," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also won their initial match since the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the fairness of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
The commissioner also mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated the matter and were open about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.
"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.
"And two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
