The English golfer Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.

Rai nailed a crucial birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off win over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion entered the final round with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.

Play-Off Climax

This led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Other Performances

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdies of his as well, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
