Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Fire So Long As England's Ace Leaves His Ego at the Door.
One snub proved sufficient. Another and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to know that winning the World Cup is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.
Tuchel wants his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of harnessing it constructively. Individual quality counts but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when celebrity prevails. Still, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham was given food for thought after being left out of the previous squad. He watched England secure their spot at the tournament in his absence. He watched the young talent perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach discuss valuing the group’s energy and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in champion style, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; a second snub would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on intimidating opponents rather than teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham displays the edge. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he has. We all must support him and create a setting where he can channel his drive in matches and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
Bellingham dominated the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about another talent? This is another prodigious No 10 in need of love and guidance. Foden has not played for the national team since March and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but the boss had to consider the player after his display in his club's victory versus the German side recently.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's style in the process.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it disrupts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists on your best position, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he stated. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”
He conceded there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the environment, it's unclear.
“I think he is also so used to playing for Man City in a particular setup, to have a clear task. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel discussed Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Interest is high.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are other options should Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is additionally a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the duo linked up for a goal. The coach will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.
“This is where eventually it becomes the duty of the individuals,” he said. He is not afraid to be blunt. There is still a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to start versus the upcoming opponents. The manager wants Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside self-importance outside. It will make a powerful England team into an more effective one.
